Coaching
Parents of Gifted Children
Parent coaching involves developing a close, supportive
relationship in which we collaborate as peers to create your
preferred future. Specifically, we will use a strength-based
approach to:
- identify the unique characteristics of your gifted child (which
typically includes being driven, intense, and complex--for
starters!) and determine your child’s strengths in
order to enhance what’s precious about your child
- identify your parenting style and learn how this can
best complement your child’s learning style and personality
- tap into your inner wisdom (because no one is more of
an expert about your child than you)
- foster your self-care, which is critical to meet the
challenges of parenting a gifted child
- identify resources and sources of support for both you
and your child
- advocate for your child’s special educational needs
- address your child’s unique social, emotional,
and behavioral issues,
- and confront society’s anti-intellectualism to
help you and your child embrace both giftedness and the
“unconventional”!
By authentically sharing stories of our discoveries, struggles
and successes in parenting our exceptional children, we can
identify your deepest longings and wishes, unleash your creative
power, and make your dreams (and your child’s dreams)
come true. In doing so, we will be “nurturing genius”……our
society’s most precious resource. (Note: participation
is not limited to parents of “school-certified”
gifted children because research shows when parents think
their child is gifted, they are usually correct)

Appreciative Inquiry:
The coaching model is based on an approach called "Appreciative
Inquiry." Appreciative Inquiry (AI) involves asking questions
that expand the parent's thinking and connect the parent to
previously unimagined possibilities by focusing on strengths
and building the best in life. AI holds that questions and
dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes and dreams
are themselves transformational - to both the parent and the
coach! Therefore, through the coaching process, parents can
shift their attention and energy away from focusing on problems
and deficits to discover their ideals and productive possibilities
for the future. Then, in collaboration with the coach, take
the necessary steps to make these a reality.
Individual Parent Coaching:
- For parents of gifted children (mother, father, or both)
- 45-60 minute phone call, scheduled at your convenience
- Parents are encouraged to sign-up for 10 sessions of coaching
with the objective of achieving long-term change and transformation
- Complimentary 1st Session: during which the coaching model
will be described in detail and any questions the parent
may have will be addressed.
- In addition to the 45-60 minute phone call, each session also includes :
- a 10-15 minute follow-up phone call as needed between sessions
- unlimited email correspondence
- resources pertaining to the parent’s and/or child's specific
needs
- Coaching is available on a sliding scale .
Coaching Small Groups of Gifted Parents:
- For small groups of parents (up to 12 maximum)
- 6 weekly ninety minute sessions, scheduled to fit the lives
of busy parents, including both morning and evening sessions.
- A complimentay copy of "A Parents Guide to Gifted Children" by James T. Webb, Ph. D., (2007), will be given to all group members. This wonderful resouce will be used to structure the discussions.
- Objective: To provide a safe, highly supportive environment
for parents to share not only their successes, wisdom and
resources but also their concerns and difficulties. By means
of a strength-based approach, the group will develop a strong
sense of shared purpose, optimism and goal-attainment. Participation
in this process will empower the group members to more adequately
and joyfully parent their gifted children with a sense of
hope for achieving their families’ preferred futures.
- Group coaching is available on a sliding scale.
